Answers · Submitting work

Do I have to do the conversation, or is it optional?

It is the second half of submitting. Uploading the file alone leaves your assignment incomplete.

Not optional. On these assignments, submitting has two steps: you upload your work, then you talk about it. Doing only the first one leaves the assignment unfinished.

  • Until the conversation is done, your assignment shows Uploaded, not Complete — and your instructor sees it that way too.
  • Start the conversation within 15 minutes of submitting. Missing that does not lock you out; a late start is recorded for your instructor.
  • If you upload and never start, Viva emails you a reminder with a link, so a forgotten conversation is easy to finish.
  • Viva never applies a penalty by itself. Whether a missed conversation costs marks is your instructor's policy, so ask them or check your syllabus.

If something is stopping you

Nerves, no quiet room, a disability, or anything else — tell your instructor rather than skipping. Accommodations exist for this, and a one-to-one oral check with your instructor is an alternative when a spoken format is not workable.

This is one page of the documentation inside Viva.

Instructors get the rest — the walkthroughs, the screenshots, and Ask Viva, which finds the right page from a typed question.
